Tawanda Mugari is a digital security expert and civic technologist who co-founded Digital Society of Africa (DSA), an organisation that strengthens the digital resilience of frontline activists, human rights defenders, and civil society organisations across Southern Africa. DSA operates in Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa, and Eswatini, providing organisational security audits, risk assessments, digital security training, security policy formulation, and tech support. To date, DSA has supported over 500 individual human rights defenders and more than 60 organisations.
Tawanda is a 2021 Ford Foundation Global Fellow and currently serves as a Civic Space Fellow at Amnesty International. He previously chaired the Department of Information Systems and Computer Science at Women’s University in Zimbabwe. He coordinates the Internet Freedom Festival’s monthly African meetups and has presented at Stanford, the Open Technology Fund, and other international platforms. Tawanda holds an MSc and BSc from Midlands State University.
